Vanaf ongeveer 1825 wordt er al geëxperimenteerd met fotografie, maar officieel begint de fotografie in 1839 als de Fransman Daguerre met in zilverplaat geëtste foto's komt. En in datzelfde jaar komt de Brit Fox ralbot met het negatief, waardoor een foto kan worden gereproduceerd, anders dan Daguerre.
