Heeft Zorro echt bestaan? Sinds 1850 circuleerden in het Amerikaanse Verre westen legendes over gemaskerde outlaws of desperados: Tiburcio
Vazquez, Joaquin Murrieta, Jacinto Trevino, Salomon Pico en Juan Flores. Hun (korte) levens hangen aaneen van de spectaculaire achtervolgingen, romantische intermezzi en doldrieste raids op postkoetsen.
Ze waren gemaskerd, sliepen zowat op hun paarden, hadden het gemunt op rijken en machtigen en deden in de volkswijken van L.A. menig vrouwenhart sneller kloppen.
Het Z-personage is niet
gemodelleerd naar één historische bandiet, maar naar een amalgaam. Rechtstreekse inspiratiebronnen zouden Tiburcio Vazquez, Joaquin Murrieta en Jack Powers, de blanke secondant van Salomon Pico, zijn.
